Mon 3rd Aug 2020Cartier Queen’s Cup UpdateWeekend wins for Park Place & Scone Polo
On Friday 31 July, The Cartier Queen’s Cup qualifiers continued at Guards Polo Club with both King Power Gold Cup Finalists (Les Lions/Great Oaks and Next Generation) securing their first wins of the tournament – Les Lions/Great Oaks defeated Thai Polo 13-12 and Next Generation secured a 15-10 win against Polo Stud Schockemöhle. The action continued on Sunday 2 August with two matches. The first match of the day saw Scone Polo vs Park Place Vaara on The Duke’s Ground, and after the first two chukkas Park Place Vaara were up 7-3. However, as Scone Polo turned up the heat, Park Place Vaara’s attack stalled and Scone Polo were able to add five goals to the scoreboard in just one chukka which meant the scores were tied 7-7 going into half-time. The goal scoring spree slowed in the second half, with just five goals scored between both sides. Nico Pieres was replaced by Barto Castagnola due to injury with just five minutes of play left, and after a goalless sixth chukka Scone Polo took home an 11-10 win. Park Place Vaara, who are still seeking their first win in the competition will have all to play for on Wednesday when they face Thai Polo. The second match of the day saw Park Place continue their unbeaten form in the tournament so far, defeating Monterosso 11-9 for The Royal Windsor Horse Cup; Monterosso proved to be tough opponents and made Park Place work hard for their victory. Park Place were prevented from scoring at all in the fourth chukka, which meant Monterosso were able to level the scores to 6-6. However, this close call seemed to be the incentive Park Place needed to push ahead and create a two goal advantage to win the match at Flemish Farm. The qualifiers continue today with Next Generations vs Segavas at 3pm.
