Mon 18th Jan 2021Santa Clara Secure Joe Barry Win for Escobar & Magrini families
Yesterday, Sunday 17 January, saw The Joe Barry Memorial Final conclude at International Polo Club Palm Beach with a memorable win for Santa Clara, the team made up of two father-son duos. The Escobar and Magrini pairs remained undefeated for the entirety of the tournament and continued their performance in Sunday’s Final with a 10-7 win against Beverly Polo.
Beverly Polo began the match with a one goal handicap advantage, but Santa Clara quickly erased this and kept Beverly Polo off the scoreboard for the first chukka, while scoring two goals of their own. Beverly Polo suffered an early injury substitution, with Lucas Diaz Alberdi replaced by Peke Gonzalez in the first chukka. However, by half-time it was clear that Beverly Polo were not to be underestimated as they levelled the scores to 4-4. Santa Clara managed to pull ahead and take the scores to 6-4 with two penalty conversions, while a yellow card for Tolito Ocampo left Beverly Polo one player short for two minutes which allowed Santa Clara to exten their lead further. Keko Magrini sealed the deal with two back-to-back goals in the final minutes of the last chukka, securing Santa Clara their 10-7 victory.
Keko Magrini, was awarded Most Valuable Player, while Yatay Shazam, played by Tolito Ocampo and owned by Beverly Equestrian received Best Playing Pony honours.
