Thu 24th Jun 2021Cartier Queen’s Cup Final: Scone vs UAE PoloResults set following yesterday’s Semi Finals
Yesterday, Wednesday 23 June, saw a bright and sunny day dawn at Guards Polo Club and some much needed respite from the rainy deluge which has persisted this week. The first Cartier Queen’s Cup Semi Final saw Scone vs Monterosso and was a match not to be missed, with the father-son Cambiaso duo leading the offensive against Monterosso, the only undefeated team in the tournament to date. Scone Polo dominated possession from the outset and scorched up and down The Duke’s Ground to score the first six goals of the match, while Monterosso’s Cubi Toccalino initially struggled to convert any penalty opportunities that did come their way. With the scores reading 7-3 at half-time, Scone let Monterosso back into the game, but the match remained dazzling to watch, with the seamless fluidity of the Cambiasos a marvel to watch – with the HPA handicap meeting due to be held tomorrow, it is hard to see how Poroto Cambiaso can remain at his current 6 goal handicap while performing at this level. Monterosso did try to get themselves back into the game, with David Stirling proving strong in defence, but Scone’s additional four penalty conversions sealed the deal and the 2019 Cartier Queen’s Cup champions secured their place in Sunday’s Final with an 11-8 victory – this will be Adolfo Cambiaso’s thirteenth Queen’s Cup Final appearance. Adolfo Cambiaso was named Most Valuable Player and his pony, Lapa 07, received the Best Playing Pony prize. After a brief lunch interlude in the Clubhouse for the Members, the teams lined up for an historic match between UAE Polo and UAE Polo II and saw HH Sheika Maitha return from injury to take her place in the UAE Polo line-up. This Semi-Final was a much different affair to the earlier match, with both UAE teams fiercely battling for possession and the lead flip flopping between the two sides throughout. Tomas Beresford and Polito Pieres combined flawlessly to secure 12 of their team’s 13 goals, while UAE Polo II’s 15-year-old Lucas Monteverde Jr. showed impressive skills, scoring five of his team’s goals, while Hugo Taylor was strong even when he had an additional battle in the third chukka with a black, bucking bronco. Going into the last chukka, UAE Polo led by just one goal, 10-9, but they turned up the heat in the final phase and ended the match with a convincing 13-10 win. Lucas Monteverde Jr. was chosen as the Most Valuable Player and El Overa Sensata, played by Monteverde was named Best Playing Pony. These results mean that Scone Polo will face UAE Polo on Sunday 27 June at 3pm at Guards Polo Club in The Cartier Queen’s Cup Final.
