Thu 22nd Jul 2021Brothers Bag Final SpotThai Polo NP vs UAE Polo Team in Gold Cup Final
Yesterday, Wednesday 21 July, saw the finalists decided for the 2021 Gold Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club, with 2021 Cartier Queen’s Cup winners, UAE Polo Team, securing their place following a 12-10 win against Great Oaks LL, whilst the Hine brothers triumphed over father-son Cambiaso duo in the second Semi Final to help take the last remaining Final spot for Thai Polo NP with a convincing 12-4 victory. The fist Semi Final of the day saw a scorching pace mirroring the increasing temperatures, with little separating Great Oaks LL and UAE Polo Team, reflected in their identical 47% shooting accuracy, until the last chukka when UAE Polo Team managed to pull ahead. The second match of the day was played under true British heat wave conditions, with temperatures reaching over 30 degrees; pre-match many predicted Scone would be the ones taking the place on the winner’s podium, but Thai Polo NP’s impressive defence held the potent Scone offense to just four goals, an impressive feat considering Scone entered the Semi Final averaging 11.0 goals per game. Thai Polo NP cruised to the overwhelming eight goal victory in one of the strongest performances of the tournament, with the instinctive play of Ned and Louis Hine combining fluidly with the experience of Harper and Pieres. These results mean that Thai Polo NP and UAE Polo Team will face each other on Sunday in the 2021 Gold Cup Final at 3pm on Cowdray’s Lawns Polo Grounds. 2021 Gold Cup Final Teams: UAE Polo Team (22): HH Sheikha Maitha (0), Tomás Panelo (6), Polito Pieres (9) & Tomás Beresford (7) Thai Polo NP (22): Louis Hine (2), Ned Hine (4), Nico Pieres (9) & James Harper (7) Photograph: Louis Hine (pictured playing for Thai Polo NP) was named the Most Valuable Player.
