Great Oaks Les Lions Claim Cartier Queen’s Cup

Extra chukka clincher by Beim

Yesterday, Sunday 12 June, Great Oaks Les Lions secured their second Queen’s Cup title in two years, building upon their 2020 success, with a nail-biting 9-8 win against Park Place Vaara in an extra chukka.
Park Place Vaara got off to a strong start, taking an early 3-1 lead and led for the majority of the match, with the combination of Hilario Ulloa and Juan Britos proving formidable once again, having honed their skills throughout the winter in the USPA’s Gauntlet of Polo. However, Great Oaks Les Lions remained within striking distance and by the fourth chukka had found their rhythm, seeing 18-year-old Cruz Heguy close the gap to just one goal. The following chukkas were challenging and hard-fought, once again it was Heguy, who in total scored six of his team’s overall goals, who levelled the scores to 8-8 to push the match into an extra chukka. Brit James Beim, who last won The Cartier Queen’s Cup in 2019, successfully converted a penalty from the spot to secure Great Oaks Les Lions a 9-8 win. Juan Martín Nero was named Most Valuable Player, Lavinia Ambar played by Ulloa was the Best Playing Pony and Lavinia Ingenua, played by Ulloa, was the Best Polo Argentino Bred. The Subsidiary Final saw King Power beat UAE 9-7 to take home The Cartier Cup.
