Mon 8th Dec 20148th Manipur Polo International Local Team India B retain trophy
The 2014 Manipur Polo International, well organised by the Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association, was played at the historic Imphal Polo Ground as part of the Manipur Sangai Festival. The International aimed to increase awareness for the plight of the Manipuri pony, a tremendously tough indigenous breed which stand between 11 and 13 hh and are struggling to survive against the decrease of their natural habitats due to rapid urbanisation.
The tournament saw nine teams compete, which represented eight countries: England, USA, South Africa and India, Thailand, France, Poland, and Mongolia. The teams battled it out between 22 – 28 November. Unfortunately, England (Alistair Paterson, Lt. Hiro Suzuki, Elliot Sands and Richard Hine) who were sponsored by Polo Times and kit by Black Hound was knocked out by South Africa in the Quarter Finals with a score of 12¬ – 6. South Africa went on to reach the Final of the International, where they came up against the local Manipur Team known as India B. Following an incredibly close match which boiled down to an extra chukka, India B clinched the golden goal and were once again crowned victors of the 8th Manipur Polo International, with a score of 7 – 5.
Following the final match the large crowd was treated to a ‘pulu’ match, in which both local and international players played in traditional dress. There were no goal posts and the players were encouraged to grab the ball with their hands as well as using their sticks – a spectacle indeed! The International will be detailed in full in the January/February issue of Polo Times.
