HRH The Duke of Edinburgh Passes Away

Founder of Guards Polo Club

HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh sadly passed away on Friday 9 April at Windsor Castle. Prince Philip had a huge enthusiasm for polo, forming the Windsor Park team, with their distinctive dark green shirts with red trim, and at his peak holding a 5 goal handicap. Prince Philip secured The Gold Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club in 1957 and 1966 with Windsor Park and also took several other key titles in England including: The Royal Windsor, Cowdray Park Challenge, Smith-Ryland, Chairman’s Cup, Combermere Cup, Westbury Cup and Junior County Cup. Further afield, Prince Philip was a finalist in The Hurlingham Open in 1966.
Such was his enthusiasm for polo, Prince Philip began in investigate the opportunity of creating a polo club closer to home (the journey from London to Cowdray Park in the days before motorways was an arduous event), and a former airfield in Windsor Great Park, with is flat surfaces, seemed like the perfect location – and so Guards Polo Club was founded in 1955 (known as the Household Brigade until 1969). As well as his impressive career playing polo, Prince Philip (alongside the late Lord Cowdray) was also instrumental in the revival of polo post-World War II and accepted the appointment of Patron of the Hurlingham Polo Association in 1952. Prince Philip’s playing career ended in 1971, but he could be regularly be seen watching matches from the sidelines at Guards Polo Club and he will be sorely missed by the polo community. A full obituary will be included in the next issue of Polo Times
