Sun 9th Jun 2024Emlor Win Duke of SutherlandNarrow 8-7 score against Valhalla
On Sunday 9 June, Valhalla and Emlor went head-to-head in the 18 goal Duke of Sutherland Final at Cowdray Park Polo Club. The Duke of Sutherland Cup was established by the 5th Duke of Sutherland KT during the 1950 polo season when a new playing field emerged on the Duke's estate, Sutton Place, situated near Guildford in Surrey. Besides Cowdray Park, it stood as the sole full-length ground in the southern region of England at that time. The first match was held there on 1 July 1950 and saw Cowdray Park, representing Sussex and under the leadership of John Cowdray, securing a 4-1 victory over Oxfordshire. In this year’s Final, although Emlor maintained their lead throughout the entirety of the match, though Valhalla made a strong comeback in the final chukka. Despite Valhalla's efforts, the outcome was sealed, with Emlor securing their second Duke of Sutherland title, following their earlier triumph in 2021.
