Mon 10th Jun 2024The Cartier Queen’s Cup Semi Final TeamsTalandracas vs Black Bears & King Power vs La Dolfina Great Oaks
Over the weekend, The Cartier Queen’s Cup Quarter Finals were played at Guards Polo Club. King Power, La Dolfina Great Oaks, Talandracas and Black Bears secured spots in Wednesday 12 June Cartier Queen's Cup Semi-Finals with impressive performances. On Saturday 8 June, despite missing their patron Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha due to injury, King Power, were ahead for most of this match. This surprised the many spectators as unbeaten Dubai had finished top in the tournament after the league stages and had impressed in every game. However, Rashid Albwardy's squad struggled to maintain their previous level of performance today, spending much of the match behind. Nico Pieres and Pablo MacDonough, seasoned veterans of Queen's Cup triumphs, capitalized on their experience. They adeptly navigated the field, exploiting any openings and converting crucial penalties. By the conclusion of the fifth chukka, King Power had surged ahead 13-8, asserting their dominance. Yet, the tide turned dramatically in the sixth chukka. Camilo Castagnola seemed to awaken to the significance of the match and he notched five consecutive goals, tying the match with just 50 seconds remaining. Suddenly, the game was thrust into extra time, with everything hanging in the balance. However, in a pivotal moment early in the seventh chukka, Nico Pieres seized an opportunity, launching a powerful shot into the goal to secure victory for a jubilant Srivaddhanaprabha and the entire King Power team, 14-13. In the second game, La Dolfina Great Oaks, led by Adolfo Cambiaso Jr. (Poroto), clinched a hard-fought win against La Dolfina Scone. With scores level at half-time, the match saw intense exchanges, with Kian Hall, Diego Cavanagh, and Poroto consistently scoring for Great Oaks. Despite efforts from Adolfo Cambiaso Sr. and Mia Cambiaso for Scone, Great Oaks maintained a slight lead, with Poroto sealing the victory with a calm finish in the final moments. On Sunday 9 June, Talandracas secured their place in the 2024 Semi Finals with a 12-8 victory over Desert Palm Polo Club. Led by Polito Pieres and standout player Rosendo Torreguitar, Talandracas displayed remarkable consistency, maintaining a lead throughout the match despite a close contest. Desert Palm missed opportunities to level the score, struggling with penalty accuracy, ultimately failing to overtake Talandracas. In the second Quarter Final, Black Bears, led by Guy Schwarzenbach, staged a comeback to defeat Juan Pepa's Cibao La Pampa 10-7. Despite trailing 4-2 at halftime, Black Bears rallied in the third chukka, seizing control with goals from Facundo and Gonzalo Pieres. Hazel Jackson's solid defensive play and Facundo Pieres' accurate penalty shooting were crucial in securing the victory for Black Bears, who claimed the Gerard Leigh Cup in a hard-fought match. These results mean the Semi Finals on Wednesday 12 June have been decided as 12pm King Power vs La Dolfina Great Oaks (the winner of this game will receive The Kerry Packer Trophy) and 3pm Talandracas vs Black Bears (the winner of this game will receive The Hubert Perrodo Trophy), with the Final scheduled for Sunday 16 June.
