England produced a commanding performance to defeat Uruguay 14-8 and lift the historic and iconic Coronation Cup at Guards Polo Club on Saturday 25 July, highlighting the 54th Hurlingham Polo Association International Day.
Receiving two goals on handicap, England made a flying start under the guidance of coach Hilario Ulloa. Uruguay opened the scoring through Ignacio 'Nachi' Viana from the penalty line, but England quickly responded as Louis Hine and Tommy Beresford fired the hosts into a 5-1 lead by the end of the opening chukka. Uruguay reduced the deficit to 6-4 during the second, only for England to answer immediately and head into halftime with an 8-5 advantage.
England continued to dictate proceedings after the interval with the Hine brothers’ intuitive plays helping to extend their lead to 10-7 before entering the final chukka comfortably ahead at 12-7. Although Uruguay continued to battle, they struggled to create opportunities from open play and relied largely on penalty conversions. England remained in control throughout the closing stages to complete an impressive 14-8 victory and reclaim one of polo's most prestigious international trophies. A true show of British talent and the first time since the Howard and Julian Hipwood duo that two British brothers have dominated together on the International circuit, Louis and Ned, rivals for much of the season, united once again for their country.
Louis Hine was named the recipient of the Rufino Laulhé Most Valuable Player Trophy after an outstanding display, while Guri Española, ridden by Hine, received the Best Playing Pony award. The Emerson & Watson Retraining of Racehorses Award went to Bockos Amber, ridden by Ollie Cudmore.
Earlier in the day, Young Argentina claimed The Whitbread Tankard with a convincing 9-3 victory over Young England. Having played this match for the last three consecutive years and having won one match apiece, it was all to play for to break the stalemate. Led by 8 goaler Paco de Narvaez, a familiar face on the UK high goal scene having formed part of the Valhalla Gold Cup side, the visitors pulled away after a competitive opening half to secure the title despite a valiant effort from the British young guns Luke Wiles, Segundo Darritchon, Will Harper and Zac Beim.
After the epic battle of The Whitard Tankard, the large crowds that had gathered for one of the highlights of the UK season were treated to an exhibition match by the future stars of The Pony Club.
