Wins for Alegria and La Dolfina

The Hurlingham Open continued yesterday with victories for two major polo organisations

The second round of the The Hurlingham Open got underway yesterday with Alegria defeating Miramar 12-9 whilst title defenders, La Dolfina beat La Aguada Las Monjitas, 12 goals to 6.

Playing on the AAP’s Field Two in Pilar, Alegria (Polito Pieres, Hilario Ulloa, Lucas Monteverde and Alfredo Cappella Barabucci – replacing an injured Fred Mannix) faced the underdogs of the tournament, Miramar (Gonzalo Deltour, Valerio Zubiaurre, Inaki Laprida and Santiago Toccalino) in the first match of the day.  Alegria took an early lead in the first three chukkas, but Miramar enjoyed a fantastic fourth, scoring two goals whilst keeping a strong defense and going into the fifth tied at 7 all. Miramar contined to try and control Alegria, but gradually the pink-shirted team edged ahead, by only two goals in the sixth, then by four in the seventh. The 28 goal Miramar clawed back a goal in the last chukka, but Alegria still retained the win, with a scoreline of 12-9.

The second match of the day was between La Dolfina (Adolfo Cambiaso, Pelon Stirling, Pablo MacDonough and Juan Martin Nero) and La Aguada Las Monjitas (Lucas James, Cristian Laprida, Eduardo Novillo Astrada and Alejandro Novillo Astrada). The 40 goal La Dolfina side had beaten Miramar overwhelmingly in their opening game with a score of 19-6; against the more experienced La Aguada Las Monjitas side, they didn’t have quite the same, easy ride.

Although Cambiaso and his teammates retained a lead of four goals at half time, it wasn’t until the fifth chukka that they eased into a score of double figures. Sadly for La Aguada Las Monjitas supporters, the attack of the Novillo Astradas brothers was kept at bay as they managed only three goals between them, whilst teammate Lucas James added another three goals (two field, one on penalty) to the tally. They were unable to overcome the 2013 Hurlingham Open winners, La Dolfina who went on to win the game 12-6.

The tournament continues today with La Aguada (Facundo Sola, Guillermo Caset, Miguel Novillo Astrada and Ignacio Novillo Astrada) facing Chapaleufu (Pepe Heguy, Nachi Heguy, Francisco Bensadon and Bautista Heguy) and Ellerstina Piaget (Facundo Pieres, Gonzalito Pieres, Mariano Aguerre and Nicolas Pieres) against Magual (Alejandro Muzzio, Ignacio Toccalino, Marcos Di Paolo, Jaime Huidobro).
