The Cartier Queen’s Cup Semi Finalists

Quarter Final action over the weekend

The Cartier Queen’s Cup Semi Final line-up is now confirmed, with Marques de Riscal/La Dolfina, Aureus, Balanz Capital and Dubai advancing from a highly competitive Quarter Final weekend where rain and harsh winds added an extra dimension to the already challenging match ups.

First up on Saturday 6 June, Marques de Riscal/La Dolfina, unbeaten through the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record, booked their place in the last four after overcoming Kazak. Trailing 6-5 at half-time, the defending British Open champions took control in the second half as Poroto Cambiaso and Simon Prado led a strong comeback to secure a hard-fought 14-11 victory.

Aureus joined them after edging Gaston in one of the matches of the tournament. The sides could never be separated by more than a goal and, after six chukkas of intense action, Mark Tomlinson struck the golden goal in overtime after an unbelievable pass up field from 2 goaler Jake Coventry, to send Aureus into the Semi Finals with a narrow 9-8 extra chukka win.

On Quarter Finals day two, Balanz Capital continued their impressive campaign with a convincing 13-8 win over Ferne Park. Its pro partnership – made up of  Jeta Castagnola and Ned Hine, both of whom are 23-years-old and the 18-year-old Lorenzo Chavanne – once again proved decisive as the tournament newcomers, and youngest pro line-up, as Balanz maintained its unbeaten run and strengthened their credentials as genuine title contenders.

Six-time Queen’s Cup champions Dubai complete the Semi Final line-up after a dominant 13-6 victory over Akasha. In a remarkably clean contest featuring just five fouls, Dubai’s experience and efficiency proved too much for their opponents, Barto Castagnola leading the scoring to continue his team’s campaign for the seventh title.

Wednesday’s Semi Finals will see unbeaten Marques de Riscal/La Dolfina face Aureus for The Kerry Packer Trophy, while six-time champions Dubai take on unbeaten Balanz Capital for The Hubert Perrodo Trophy in a brother vs brother contest.
