Wed 2nd May 2012Argentina win Copa de las Naciones Pieres brothers prove too good for Brazil in 26-goal international at Palermo
Argentine 10-goalers Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres warmed up for the English high-goal season in style by leading Argentina to the Copa de las Naciones title at Palermo. The talented duo teamed up with five-goaler Pablo Llorente and little-known two-goaler Carlos Deladino as they beat Brazil 11-9 in the one-off 26-goal match in Buenos Aires. Brazil – whose team was made up of Pedro Zacharías (6), Rodrigo Ribeiro de Andrade (8), Joao Paulo Gannon (7) and José Eduardo Kalil (5) – started well and the teams were level at 3-3 after the first of six chukkas. Argentina then eased in front by three goals, 8-5, at half time and, with Facundo Pieres top-scoring with four goals, they stayed ahead to win by two goals. Next up for the Pieres brothers is the English high-goal season, which gets underway with the Queen’s Cup later this month. Facundo is playing for the much fancied La Bamba De Areco, while Gonzalito is representing the returning Ellerston team.
