Thu 31st May 2012Cortium claim second Queen's Cup win Adrian Kirby's side take another big scalp as they make an impressive start to the English high-goal season
British patron Adrian Kirby’s Cortium sprang another surprise as they beat Les Lions 15-12 in what proved to be one of the most exciting matches so far in this year’s Cartier Queen’s Cup. Cortium began their campaign with a close victory over Dubai, and were looking for a repeat performance against Joachim Gottschalk’s side. They had the upper hand in the first two chukkas, opening up a 5-3 lead, however, Les Lions, featuring Agustin and Sebastian Merlos, offered a brilliant riposte, scoring eight goals in the third and fourth chukkas to Cortium’s two to lead 11-7. The match was far from over, however, with the impressive Francisco Elizalde looking very good value for his six-goal handicap as Cortium took control. Kirby’s team reduced the deficit to just one goal going into the final chukka and they continued their fine form before the final bell to win by three goals. With two wins out of two so far, Cortium look well-placed to claim a place in the quarter finals. They will guarantee their spot in the knock-out stages with a win over the all-British Belmont Farm team in their final group match. Yesterday’s other game saw Ayala, featuring Gonzalito Pieres and JP Clarkin, beat Saudi Zedan 11-8. Picture: Adrian Kirby.
