Mon 12th May 2025The La Martina Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mothers Centenary Trophy Extra chukka win for Ojo Caliente
Yesterday, Sunday 11 May, Ojo Caliente and Tchogan/Polo Performance battled it out in a thrilling Final at Guards Polo Club for The La Martina Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s Centenary Trophy. An evenly matched first half saw the teams tied at 3-3 going into half-time, but Ojo Caliente came out on fire in the third chukka and took the lead for the first time with the Hine siblings, Ned and Milly, combining seamlessly with an unstoppable Facundo Sola, 6-4. Tchogan/Polo Performance came out fighting in the fourth chukka and James Harper, playing alongside his son Wills, fought all the way to the goal to equalise the scores once again, 6-6, followed by an impressive run to goal to take the lead, 7-6. However, Ojo Caliente weren’t ready to admit defeat and Sola passed a beautiful shot to Milly Hine (who showed why she has just been raised to 10 goals in America’s women’s handicaps) by running the ball down the ground from the half-way line to score under immense pressure to tie the game, 7-7, and in doing so, sending the Final into an extra chukka. Tchogan/Polo Performance missed an early penalty opportunity, the gusty wind caught many a penalty taker unawares yesterday. Ojo Caliente worked together, with the ball passed from player to player up the field until it found the goal off the stick of Ned Hine, to secure the win 8 goals to 7.
Milly Hine, who displayed goal scoring and teamwork talent, was deservedly chosen as Most Valuable Player, and James Harper’s Desiree was chosen as the Best Playing Pony – with La Martina’s President Adrian Simonetti, Argentine Ambassador Mariana Plaza and Mr Ke Lony You presenting the prizes.
